DepEd Stops Schools from Sending their Students on Field Trips

Due to the fatal bus accident that killed 15 people and injured 40 students of BestLink College of the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) has ordered a stop to field trips on both public elementary and high schools.

According to DepEd, the moratorium would be effective until the opening of classes in June to give time for the agency to review existing policies and coordinate the implementing details nationwide.

The department said the review ‘will cover alignment of field trips to learning outcomes, security and safety, and responsibilities and accountabilities’ for the schools, parents, and government agencies.

The Commission on Higher Education has earlier suspended all field trips for public and private colleges and universities but for DepEd’s order, only public elementary and high schools would be covered.

DepEd excluded private schools due to their direct responsibilities in the conduct of their activities.

“Should the committee see the need and propriety to extend the moratorium to private schools, DepEd will do so at the proper time,”

For public schools which already secured permits and have existing contracts for field trips may still be able to do so granted that existing guidelines especially on safety are strictly followed. DepEd also reiterated that participating in field trip or educational tours is not mandatory.

School officials are also reminded to verify the proper registration and road worthiness of the vehicles to be used and ensure that the drivers are knowledgeable and have proper frame of mind while on the road.

Likewise, the places that they visit must be educational, like cultural and historical sites, or science exhibits in museums. Mall trips and noontime shows are discouraged.

The Department of Education needs 18,238 Teachers for Grades 1 to 10, and 21,858 for Senior High School Educators

Are you currently on the jobless list? Then, we have some good news for you! The Philippine government is looking for at least 74,000 people to fill in their vacancy list.

If you want to work as a teacher, health professional, engineering personnel or Army member, you should start polishing that resume and head on to your local government unit.

The Department of Education for instance, needs a total of 40,096 teachers, 18,238 of which would be teaching Grades 1 to 10, and 21, 858 would teach senior high schools nationwide.

According to Education Secretary Jesus Lorenzo Mateo, K-10 teachers need to be licensed, while senior high school educators would be given five years to pass the licensure exam for them to be regularized. In addition, teachers would have no say in where they would be deployed. They would only be assigned to locations where there is a deficit of teachers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health also needs 20,000 people to fill in their vacancies nationwide. Although the government agency has already hired 23,000 various health professionals like doctors, nurses, midwives and dentists, they still need more.

Unlike with Deped, applicants may submit their resume and requirements to the hospital or health offices they would want to work in.

The Philippine Army is looking for almost 14,000 applicants to fill in vacancies for offices, engineering units, and new recruits. Army spokesperson Col. Benjamin Hao said that an applicant who successfully joined the training would already be given Php 16,000 take home pay. Applicants may visit recruitment centers in Fort Bonifacio in Metro Manila, Camp Lapu-Lapu in Visayas and Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro.
